I was able to watch Mizuho Nishikubo’s Giovanni’s Island in a cinema during an anime film festival. I could hear people in the row behind me sniffing and sobbing quietly towards the end. We call that effect ‘dem feels’ in anime fandom. There’s plenty of anime fans who’ll appreciate a good ‘dem feels’ story. The […]

Real enough for you? A review of Appleseed Alpha
I think the Appleseed series is underrated. It’s always been great fun and always pushed ahead to explore with what animation can do. Appleseed Alpha is no exception. At times, for the scenery, I actually wondered whether it was a photo still that had been animated over the top of. The animation quality in Appleseed […]
Sexy gun witches: A review of Bayonetta – Bloody Fate
Bayonetta was a popular action computer game. It got great reviews, sold well over a million and had intense combat. It had a “witch time” system in which the frantic melee slowed down and your sexy witch could take down angels and fight back against the impressive bosses. The movie, Bayonetta: Bloody Fate, follows a […]
Competition: Saints and Soldiers – The Void
101 Films has a dramatic World War II movie out this month. Saints and Soldiers – The Void tells the story of Sergeant Jesse Owens; an African-American soldier put in charge of an all-white tank crew with one final mission. It’s the last few days of World War II but there is still a platoon […]
Demonically intense: A review of Berserk 3 – The Advent
It was two years ago that I watched the first two new Berserk movies. The Egg of the King creates an interesting cast and world. Then as the second movie, The Battle for Doldrey, ends we get a kick in the teeth and things look to be over for our characters. The third movie, The […]
Black Butler live action coming to UK; latest trailer
I watched a chunk of the Black Butler anime before giving up. I wasn’t the target demographic. The live action is very different. It’s set in the future. There’s a different sort of the anime-esq gender role tensions. Sebastian is still one hell of a butler. He’s looking after a young noble who has had […]

George Clooney and Britt Robertson star. They can access a place called Tomorrowland and while they visit their actions have a direct […]

Kingsman trailer promises hi-tech British action
A remake of the Avengers (the British original, not the superheroes) or perhaps even a new James Bond? Nope. Not so. This is the second trailer for the forthcoming 20th Century Fox Kingsman movie. Due out in February 2015 the movie is directed by Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class) based on a comic book […]
Nurse Baymax is dork cute
We’ve discussed how Disney’s Big Hero 6 is likely to differ from the comic book series. All that’s left to do is sit back and enjoy the marketing before the animation opens.
