The Green Ruby Pumpkin of Halloween horror

October 25, 2012 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

This rather awesome Halloween short story is a project by Miguel Ortega and Tran Ma. They’re both visual effect artists. The entire project was made in the living room. No? You can see the making of here and its fantastic (even if they have a green screen in their living room).

Afterschool Midnighters review

October 21, 2012 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

Bonkers is a good word for Afterschool Midnighters. This anime is a CG effort. In fact, the film came about after a demo reel from director Hitoshi Takekiyo became so popular that a full length feature was commissioned. The quality of the CG is really high. Afterschool Midnighters shows what is possible with virtual animation […]

Portal Turrets: Cute, creepy and dangerous

September 18, 2012 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

Zachariah Scott is a badass and grandstander. It says so in his YouTube account. He works at BioWare as a cinematic designer and has worked on Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3. He went through a spell of creating Portal Turret video. They’re rather cute but also rather creepy. They’re funny and sad at […]

Team Fortress Left 4 Dead mashup is a splatterific resume

September 8, 2012 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

Randall Glass wants a job as an animator so he made this blood splattered animation to highlight his talents. No surprise to note that LinkedIn mentions this Seattle Area artist listing Zombie Studios, Adobe as previous employment. He worked there for 7 years helping to code some automatation tools. His site NailBiter.net is pretty basic […]

Neil Gaiman to appear on Bendito Machine

August 20, 2012 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

Bendito Machine began life as an art project, a short film, about the foolishness of human conflict. It’s now a series about simple people who need their machines to survive and who are governed by idiotic big heads who fail to understand how little they know. I was a backer to a failed KickStarter project […]

The depressingly impressive Ark animation

August 1, 2012 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

Ark was directed by Grzegorz Jonkajtys and is notable for, in addition to the storyline, unconventional technique used in filming. It used a Spider-man, a Nikon D70 camera, a MILO Motion Control system and a set. Computer animation then blended all that together. There are more details and pictures on the art community Behance but […]

Sci-fi short: Swelter

June 2, 2012 by Andrew Girdwood 1 Comment

Swelter is a short sci-fi animation by Jacob Streilen (music by Michael Paul Kennedy). The film was made in Flash, with photoshop being used for backgrounds, after effect colours and composition. The animation was Streilen’s second year project for CalArts and, I think, would have been most likely to have signaled him as a talent […]

Cake, Zoetrope and Tim Burton mashed together?

May 26, 2012 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

The zoetrope was an early device for animation or the illusion of movement. A line of pictures was placed in the middle of the drum, along the outside edge, with slits cut in the side so you could review them from the outside. The drum was spinned and it looked like the image was movnig […]

Mound – a Halloween claymation

October 31, 2011 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

Mound is a claymation by Allison Schulnik. There’s much to be impressed with in this animation – for example, all the background movement. Can you imagine all the little tweaks and adjustments Schulnik would have had to have done? This was published to Vimeo just before Halloween. I can’t say if that was the intention […]
