The latest Dungeons & Dragons Unearthed Arcana playtest is upfront about where these new character options come from. They are the Heroes of Krynn, and they are Dragonlance.
Typically, Wizards of the Coast don’t playtest things for a laugh. As a rule of thumb, a playtest generally means the D&D publisher is seriously considering entering them into the world of 5e.
There are no certainties here. It is only a playtest, but the Heroes of Krynn is the strongest clue yet that Dragonlance 5e is on the way.
It’s not been an easy road so far, with the Dragonlance authors claiming that racism and sexism rows got in the way of the latest fiction coming out. However, that nasty fight was settled out of court.
Now a 6-page playtest download has rules for the Kenders, swapping out the uncomfortable “kleptomania” with something supernatural. The rules say;
Unknown to most mortals, a magical phenomenon surrounds a kender. Spurred by their curiosity and love for trinkets, curios, and keepsakes, a kender’s pouches or pockets will be magically filled with these objects. No one knows where these objects come from, not even the kender. This has led many kender to be mislabeled as thieves when they fish these items out of their pockets.”
There’s also the subclass for Lunar Magic and sorcerers, putting a new twist on the class by creating three sets of spells, one for each moon phase.
Mage of High Sorcery and Knights of Solamnia backgrounds and new feats are also added.
