Brittannia Games has made Colin Speirs’ 22-year-old Essence system a free download.
The 12-page RPG rules engine is available from DriveThruRPG.
Essence is a setting-neutral system suitable for fantasy, adventure, pulp and sci-fi.
In fact, that’s what Brittannia uses it for the pulp sci-fi 1930s adventures of Rocket Jocks and the charity-supporting Vis Imperium Victoriana.
The basics of Essence is a single d20 and nine attributes;
- Strength
- Constitution
- Agility
- Intelligence
- Wisdom
- Discipline
- Appearance
- Bardic Voice
- Piety
There’s no connection between this Essence and Renegade’s Essence 20 the system for the Power Rangers, G.I Joe or Transformers RPGs.
