Humans fled Earth a thousand years ago after it was destroyed by the shapeshifting giant monsters called Gauna. It’s not known what happened to the massive spaceships the last of mankind took too as they lost contact with one another and were chased by the Gauna.
Sidonia is one such craft. It’s protected by large mechs called Guardians, powered by “Higgs particles” and armed with canons for long range and blades known as Kabizashi for close combat. Life on board the Sidonia is based on that of Japan except with human cloning, asexual reproducction, hybrid human/animal mutations and photosynthesis are common place.
The plot follows Nagate Tanikaze who grew up in the underground core of Sidonia and who practised every day on an old Guardian pilot simulator. Tanikaze is eventually found by the other humans, tested and made an actual Guardian pilot.
