OpenDyslexic Typography and the Arch d4
Tabletop dice frequently create visual barriers for players with visual impairments, dyscalculia, or dyslexia. Standard polyhedral sets often rely on high-contrast swirls or ornamental scripts that obscure the numbers. Sirius Dice addresses this by applying the OpenDyslexic typeface, which uses weighted bottoms on each glyph to anchor letters and numbers, reducing mental flipping and misreading during gameplay.
The d4’s physical design departs from the traditional sharp-peaked tetrahedron. Rolling a standard d4 often leaves numbers displayed along base edges or at angles that require you to lean over the table. The set introduces an arch-style d4 with flattened tops, ensuring the rolled result faces directly upward.
The packaging also addresses handling issues. Traditional clear acrylic dice tubes feature push-caps or screw lids that separate easily and can be hard for players with fine motor control challenges to manipulate. The included carry tube uses an attached, easy-open cap that remains tethered to the main casing.
Kara Kenna, Franchise Creative for Dungeons & Dragons, said in a statement,
As someone with dyslexia who has built a career in gaming, accessibility and representation are deeply meaningful to me. The Disability Pride Dice Set is a celebration of the many ways we experience games and find belonging in our community. I’m proud to help make sure everyone can see themselves as part of the adventure.”
Charity Allocations and Tabletop Standards
While Sirius Dice has pledged proceeds to the American Association of People with Disabilities, the announcement states only that “a portion of each sale” will be donated.
This phrasing lacks the clear transparency common across roleplaying games charity initiatives. Crowdfunding projects and platforms such as Humble Bundle or DriveThruRPG typically define an exact percentage, a fixed dollar sum per transaction, or a guaranteed minimum donation target up front. Without a specified figure, consumers cannot verify how much of their $19.99 purchase directly aids AAPD programmes versus manufacturing and licensing overheads.
Distribution Barriers and Platform Constraints
The set is sold exclusively through the Sirius Dice online shop in the United States. Confining an accessibility-focused product to a single domestic storefront creates steep overseas shipping rates and import duties for disabled roleplayers living abroad. It also bypasses local game stores, which act as community hubs for players seeking physical demonstrations before purchasing tactile gear. We understand, though, that Sirius Dice would likely prefer to have international markets within easy reach but we live in challenging political times.
Digital integration also remains locked to a single provider. Each box includes a code to claim digital dice inside D&D Beyond. While convenient for groups using official digital toolsets, this excludes wider virtual tabletops such as Roll20 or Foundry VTT. Those external platforms host custom screen readers, high-contrast user interfaces, and automated roll-macro tools that many disabled roleplaying groups rely upon to play.
