Chrys Sellers and studio Hectic Electron are relaunching Raccoon Sky Pirates Classic on Kickstarter today, 1 October 2026, following the cancellation of the over-scoped Total Chaos Edition earlier this summer. The Columbus, Ohio publisher pulled the previous campaign after realising the production could not hit its funding target, opting instead to revive the original out-of-print mailer-box format with revised rules and compartmentalised add-ons.

The original mailer-box edition of Raccoon Sky Pirates built an audience around a simple, chaotic premise: players portray raccoons piloting an improvised flying contraption across town to loot a suburban home and escape before dawn. The game’s structure centres on push-your-luck vehicle management and heist mechanics, where escalating operational failures constantly threaten to bring the craft down. The new campaign keeps the core mechanics intact while offering back-catalogue expansions as separate components.
Production History and the Total Chaos Pivot
Hectic Electron previously pulled the plug on Raccoon Sky Pirates: Total Chaos Edition mid-campaign when projections showed it stalling at 50% to 60% of its target. The cancellation marked the second time Sellers halted a live crowdfunding drive, following a similar decision during the Defy the Gods campaign.
At the time, Chrys Sellers, Game Designer at Hectic Electron, told their newsletter;
Canceling the Kickstarter was a gut-wrenching decision, but it was the right one. ‘The money in the pot isn’t yours,’ as they say. The sunk cost wasn’t going to justify putting more effort into the game. It might have gotten halfway to its goal, or even 60%, by the end of June. But it wasn’t going to make it all the way, and I need to conserve my limited time. Canceling the Kickstarter is also a wake-up call. This is exactly what happened with Defy the Gods! How often will I keep aiming too high and doing a mulligan? I want to learn from this and change how I do things.”
Following that cancellation, Sellers took Defy the Gods directly to Origins Game Fair in Columbus to gather player feedback and regroup. The resulting strategy behind Raccoon Sky Pirates Classic strips the baseline pledge down to a standalone print-and-play PDF or the core mailer box, moving components that previously bloated manufacturing estimates into an isolated add-on bundle called the Junk Drawer.
Mechanical Framework and Campaign Tiers
In Raccoon Sky Pirates, players assemble a jury-rigged aerial ship out of junkyard scrap. The run proceeds in three distinct operational phases: flying across town, raiding the suburban target, and surviving the return flight. Successes and failures advance a communal Disaster Track; unmanaged damage or bad dice results cause parts to fall off the ship, leading to uncontrolled crashes.
The revised box set retains this rules loop, adding updated character drawings and expanded item cards. Day-one backers also receive a digital haunted house map featuring four floors, an extended Disaster Track, and a table of 100 cursed items to steal. Promotional materials for the launch video feature voiceover work credited to Yuri Lowenthal.
