Wizards of the Coast announced an official Star Wars crossover for Dungeons & Dragons during its keynote presentation at Gen Con 2026 in Indianapolis. Scheduled to launch in late 2027 under the publisher’s new Universes Beyond imprint, the upcoming release will form the centrepiece of a planned thematic release slate designated as the Season of Rebellion.

The reveal capped off a wide-ranging roadmap presentation, following the confirmation of a World of Warcraft gameplay expansion arriving in November 2026. Specific mechanics remain under wraps, but the presentation concluded with an actor dressed as Darth Vader taking the stage alongside joint branding logos for Dungeons & Dragons and Star Wars.
Dan Ayoub, Head of Dungeons & Dragons Franchise at Wizards of the Coast, said in a statement:
With Universes Beyond, we are expanding Dungeons & Dragons into even more worlds we love, like World of Warcraft. At the same time, we are revisiting core D&D settings, including Dark Sun, Dragonlance, and Greyhawk. What’s more, in a crossover that fans have dreamed about for years, Star Wars is coming to Dungeons & Dragons for the first time, bringing the iconic galaxy to our players’ tabletops. Our wide range of announcements show that we are committed to delivering more choices, and more ways for friends and family to adventure together.”
Adapting Sci-Fi to the d20 Engine
Translating a galaxy of blasters, starships, and Force powers into the 5.5e ruleset represents a significant technical undertaking for the design team. While World of Warcraft maps directly onto existing fantasy character classes, species, and spellcasting structures, a Star Wars setting requires systemic adaptations for ranged cover mechanics, lightsaber duelling, and vehicle combat.
This is not the first time Wizards of the Coast has adapted the franchise for tabletop play. The publisher previously held the licence from 2000 to 2010, releasing the original d20 Star Wars rules engine alongside the ENnie-award-winning Star Wars Saga Edition in 2007. That product line laid the mechanical foundations for several major digital roleplaying games before the licence expired.
Licensing Landscapes and Legacy Systems
Following the expiration of the original licence, Fantasy Flight Games took over publication in 2012, introducing a custom narrative dice system across titles such as Star Wars: Edge of the Empire and Star Wars: Age of Rebellion. In 2020, parent company Asmodee transferred ongoing management of the line to Edge Studio.
Despite long gaps between new physical releases and extended approval pipelines through Lucasfilm, Edge Studio still maintains its active landing page for the official Star Wars Roleplaying Game product line. The arrival of an official Dungeons & Dragons crossover in 2027 brings two distinct tabletop interpretations of the galaxy into parallel existence, catering to different mechanical preferences across the hobby.
