John Hight will step down as President of Wizards of the Coast on September 1, concluding a brief two-year stint at the helm of the tabletop publisher. The departure of the former Warcraft executive was revealed in a US Securities and Exchange Commission filing on July 27, which confirmed he will transition into an advisory role at Hasbro.

The abrupt executive shift comes just days before Wizards of the Coast hosts its major Dungeons & Dragons keynote at Gen Con and follows a difficult week for parent company Hasbro. Days ago, Hasbro confirmed a $56 million write-down on cancelled video game projects slated for 2028 and beyond, an area of the business that fell directly under Hight’s oversight.
Despite the short tenure, Hight oversaw significant changes across Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons. Before arriving in Renton in August 2024, he spent nearly 13 years at Blizzard Entertainment managing the Warcraft franchise. His arrival at Wizards of the Coast was heralded as a push into digital gaming, but the recent cancellation of several unannounced video games highlights the difficulties the publisher has faced in replicating its tabletop success on screens.
The transition also unfolds against a backdrop of internal tension. In June, developers working on Magic: The Gathering Arena successfully formed the United Wizards of the Coast union, securing representation amidst industry-wide volatility.
In a bid to reassure investors and the community, Wizards of the Coast issued a statement insisting that the company’s core businesses remain unaffected.
