Distributor GKIDS and Glasgow-based Anime Limited have announced that Hayao Miyazaki‘s classic animated film Kiki’s Delivery Service is coming to IMAX screens across the UK and Ireland on 21 August 2026. The exclusive theatrical run features a brand-new 4K remaster, available in both the original Japanese audio with English subtitles and the English dubbed version. Following the IMAX window, a wider 4K release will hit UK and Irish cinemas on 28 August 2026.
This theatrical event continues a growing trend of classic anime returning to cinemas, following the recent theatrical re-release of Akira. The release marks the first time Kiki’s Delivery Service will play on IMAX screens in the region. The project launches a broader push by GKIDS to bring 23 Studio Ghibli titles to local cinema screens following their acquisition of regional distribution rights.
The Studio Ghibli Legacy
First released in 1989, Kiki’s Delivery Service remains one of director Hayao Miyazaki‘s most celebrated works. Adapted from the original novel by Eiko Kadono, the hand-drawn feature tells the story of a young witch as she finds her place in a new town. The production features a score composed by Hayao Miyazaki‘s longtime collaborator, Joe Hisaishi.
The new 4K remaster focuses on preserving the craftsmanship of Studio Ghibli‘s detailed artwork while enhancing image clarity for large formats. GKIDS confirmed that future 4K IMAX releases in Autumn 2026 will include Arrietty and Whisper of the Heart, alongside home video releases across the full 23-film Ghibli catalogue.
Distribution Dynamics
The rollout represents a major coordinated effort between GKIDS and Anime Limited, following Toho Global’s acquisition of both entities. Anime Limited will manage local coordination across UK and Irish cinema venues.
Specific participating IMAX venues and advance ticket sales for the initial IMAX screenings are open through official distribution channels.
