Crunchyroll has confirmed it will stream the television anime adaptation of SSS-Class Revival Hunter starting in January 2027, pairing the announcement with an initial teaser visual, trailer, and core production credits. The streaming platform holds worldwide distribution rights outside Asia, plus select Asian territories including Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, and the Indian subcontinent.
The adaptation brings the popular South Korean web novel and webcomic property to Japanese television screens, centring on Gongja Kim, a bottom-tier hunter who acquires an S-rank ability that requires his own death to reset time. Takeo Otsuka leads the voice cast as Gongja Kim, joined by Satoshi Hino as the spectral Sword Emperor.
Behind the scenes, veteran comedy and slice-of-life director Hiroaki Sakurai (The Disastrous Life of Saiki K., The Demon Girl Next Door) leads a grim, violent progression fantasy. Series composition and scripts come from Sayuri Oba, while veteran animator Takahiro Yoshimatsu (Hunter x Hunter 2011, Trigun, Overlord) handles character designs. STUDIO fu, based in Suginami, Tokyo, handles animation production.
That production setup raises immediate technical questions for the winter season. Suginami houses a dense cluster of subcontracting animation houses, but STUDIO fu has historically operated as a secondary support partner rather than a primary action pipeline. Delivering high-calibre battle sequences within a tight four-month promotional runway puts direct pressure on production management, particularly given the visual fidelity required by the webcomic’s following.
The official announcement materials notably lack direct credit for the original South Korean creators. While the press release points readers toward Tapas to read the comic, it omits author Shin Noah and illustrator Bill K (Neungpa), attributing copyright purely to the “SSS-Class Revival Hunter Production Committee”. This mirrors an industry pattern where corporate production committees absorb Korean intellectual property branding while obscuring the individual writers and artists behind the source material.
The official synopsis sets out the premise:
A mysterious tower crawling with monsters has suddenly appeared, drawing Hunters willing to risk their lives for glory and riches. Gongja Kim, a weak F-rank Hunter, spends his days envying the Flame Emperor who reigns as the top Hunter. But his chance at greatness finally arrives when he joins forces with the Sword Emperor and gains a rare S-rank skill, with one catch: he must die to activate it.
