Humans fled Earth a thousand years ago after it was destroyed by the shapeshifting giant monsters called Gauna. It’s not known what happened to the massive spaceships the last of mankind took to as they lost contact with one another and were chased by the Gauna.
Sidonia is one such craft. It’s protected by large mechs called Guardians, powered by “Higgs particles” and armed with cannons for long range and blades known as Kabizashi for close combat. Life on board the Sidonia is based on that of Japan except with human cloning, asexual reproduction, hybrid human/animal mutation,s and photosynthesis are commonplace.
The plot follows Nagate Tanikaze, who grew up in the underground core of Sidonia and who practised every day on an old Guardian pilot simulator. Tanikaze is eventually found by other humans, who test it and make an actual Guardian pilot.
