Swedish tabletop publisher Free League Publishing has launched a major crowdfunding campaign for its flagship Tolkien fantasy roleplaying game, bringing players to the southern realms of Minas Tirith and the Riddermark while updating its core game mechanics. Funded within five minutes of going live on BackerKit on 22 September 2026, the campaign has already amassed over $1.6 million (approx. £1.2 million) against a modest $50,000 goal, demonstrating the persistent appetite for games set in Middle-earth.
The crowdfunding presents an ambitious triple expansion across two separate rule configurations. In addition to bolstering the bespoke, narrative-driven mechanics of The One Ring, Free League is simultaneously delivering parallel editions adapted for the revised fifth edition ruleset under The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying 5E. Lead designer Francesco Nepitello and writer Gareth Hanrahan have returned to detail the beleaguered bastions of Men, document the Third Age’s adversary ecosystem, and clarify core mechanical procedures for both game systems.
A Dual-System Journey South
The centrepiece setting sourcebook, titled The White Tower and the Hall of Gold for The One Ring (adapted as Realms of the South for the 5E ruleset), moves the timeline away from Eriador down to the embattled fiefdoms of Gondor and the windswept plains of Rohan. Written by veteran designer Gareth Hanrahan, the volume introduces new Heroic Cultures and Virtues, while codifying dedicated mechanical sub-systems for mounted combat, horsemanship, and waterborne travel along the Anduin.
Loremasters face an expanded remit in managing adversarial threats through the companion bestiary, titled Creatures Strange and Foul (released under the title Of Orcs and Evil Things for 5E). Rather than serving merely as a roster of standard combatants, the tome provides detailed Fell Abilities and distinct encounter mechanics for adversaries ranging from Haradrim champions and Black Númenórean agents to ancient terrors including Balrogs and the Nameless Things of the world’s subterranean roots.
Revised Systems and Standalone Solo Play

Free League has taken this opportunity to lightly revise and reorganise The One Ring core volume, incorporating clarifications across player character advancement, combat flow, and the harrowing toll of the Shadow mechanic. Crucially, the revisions formally integrate Strider Mode directly into the hardback bindings of both game lines. Originally issued as a standalone PDF supplement, this system provides solo mechanics, oracle-style tables, and prompt generators enabling lone wanderers to explore Tolkien’s wilderness without requiring a Loremaster.
For the 5E adaptation, the new edition modernises the conversion for full compatibility with the revised 5.5 tabletop standard, while expanding the text so it functions as a comprehensive, standalone roleplaying game that no longer requires external rulebooks to run. In an industry increasingly mindful of backwards compatibility, Free League has confirmed that existing digital owners of the core manuals on DriveThruRPG and Free League Unbound will receive automatic updates to the refreshed editions at no cost.
The Pledge Tiers
Reward tiers are divided cleanly between standalone books, standard trilogies, deluxe faux-leather collector sets, and comprehensive all-in packages across both systems:

Early physical backers who pledge within the initial 48-hour window receive an exclusive 8.5 x 11-inch art print featuring cover illustrations by Antonio De Luca or Daniel Zrom. Free League’s early funding momentum has also unlocked stretch goals including regional paper maps and a set of illustrated cardboard combat standees for all physical bundle backers.
The BackerKit campaign operates under an all-or-nothing funding model and runs until Thursday, 15 October 2026 at 8:00 pm BST. Physical rewards and fulfilment dispatch are currently estimated to begin in October 2027.
