Behind the scenes with the 3D Hobbit

I really enjoyed this video blog from Peter Jackson from the scene (but not the New Zealand location) of The Hobbit.

There’s a lot of technical detail here. How they build and use the 3D cameras is impressive. Imagine shooting in 5K straight to 128gig cards? They can’t shoot for very long! The decision to shoot at 48 frames per second must, surely, impact how well The Hobbit will work as a 3D movie.

If you want to be cynical you could see this blog as a pitch for the movie; as a way to say “Yeah, we know 3D isn’t popular… but we’re confident we can make it work”.
