Seattle-based tabletop publisher Green Ronin Publishing has officially released Mastermind Maker, a dedicated digital character creation tool designed for Mutants & Masterminds 3rd Edition. Designed by game designer Steve Kenson and the software team at Green Ronin, the program aims to streamline character building and point calculations for the popular superhero roleplaying game. The software launch coincides with Green Ronin’s presence at Gen Con in Indianapolis, where the publisher was exhibiting at Booth 101.
Mastermind Maker is currently available for Windows PC, with macOS and Linux versions in active development. The software is offered in two distinct tiers: a Standard Edition priced at $19.95 (£19.95) and a Deluxe Edition priced at $59.95. Buyers of the Standard Edition receive a $20 discount voucher towards upgrading to the Deluxe Edition later.
Standard versus Deluxe features
The Standard Edition focuses on core tabletop play, integrating rules and character options from the Deluxe Hero’s Handbook. It includes automated point-buy validation, real-time math tracking, a quickstart character generator, and an importer for legacy Hero Lab (.por) files. Users can export custom character sheets as PDFs, PNGs, or plain text formats.
The Deluxe Edition caters to Game Masters and homebrew creators by embedding rules content from secondary sourcebooks. It incorporates advantages, modifiers, and equipment from Power Profiles, Gadget Guides, Deluxe Gamemaster’s Guide, Hero High, Superteam Handbook, Cosmic Handbook, and Time Traveler’s Codex, alongside upcoming support for the Vigilante’s Handbook. Deluxe also introduces an open-architecture homebrew editor and an integrated Play Mode featuring dice rolling and condition tracking.
Digital tools and platform accessibility
While Mastermind Maker addresses long-standing demand for modern digital software within superhero roleplaying games, the initial Windows-only rollout leaves macOS and Linux tabletop groups waiting for future platform updates. Additionally, live session tools such as in-app dice rolling and extensive sourcebook integration remain exclusive to the higher-priced Deluxe Edition.
