Edge Studio silent as fan administrators address Star Wars roleplaying game future

Dan Ayoub, Head of Dungeons & Dragons Franchise at Wizards of the Coast, announced an official Star Wars crossover for Dungeons & Dragons at Gen Con 2026 in Indianapolis, scheduled for release in 2027 under the Universes Beyond imprint. The news caused immediate concern among tabletop players who questioned whether Edge Studio, based in Toulouse, France, had lost the licence for its dedicated Star Wars roleplaying games.

A widely shared Discord message circulated online claiming that Edge Studio still holds the official licence for the Star Wars roleplaying game line originally created by Fantasy Flight Games. However, the message did not originate from official publisher channels or Gilles Garnier, Head of Edge Studio. Instead, the update was posted by Marlow, a lead administrator for swrpgcommunity.com, an independent fan group with no corporate affiliation to Edge Studio, Asmodee, or Lucasfilm.

We wanted to issue an announcement sharing this news, while also clarifying some of the finer details of the announcement to put misinformation at bay.

Here’s the basic information as announced at Gen Con 2026 from Wizards of the Coast:

With Universes Beyond, we are expanding Dungeons & Dragons into even more worlds we love, like World of Warcraft … Star Wars is coming to Dungeons & Dragons for the first time, bringing the iconic galaxy to our players’ tabletops.

Dungeons & Dragons | Star Wars™ collaboration will take place in the Season of Rebellion, coming 2027.

Here’s what also remains true:

• This collaboration is part of Dungeon’s & Dragons new “Universes Beyond” sets. Universe Beyond sets are new to D&D, but are a feature of Wizard’s of the Coast’s other big property Magic: The Gathering.
• Universe Beyond sets are usually single releases, although bigger successes do return. We can imagine a similar set up for D&D.
• This is not a new d20 / 5e based Tabletop RPG.
• EDGE Studios still retains the license for the Star Wars RPG line originally created by FFG.

Beyond this information, our server policy is to provide a place for players of Star Wars Tabletop RPG games to have a home. We will support discussion, player LFG tools, and resource sharing for all future Star Wars Tabletop RPG properties, editions, or games – inclusive of this D&D collaboration.

The fan message aimed to clear up confusion about how Lucasfilm handles tabletop branding. Unlike a standalone game line, the 2027 release is a single expansion set for Dungeons & Dragons fifth edition, similar to the upcoming World of Warcraft set scheduled for late 2026. Lucasfilm regularly grants non-exclusive licences across different game categories. This arrangement allows Edge Studio to keep publishing its custom-dice roleplaying games, such as Edge of the Empire, Age of Rebellion, and Force and Destiny, while Wizards of the Coast produces d20 crossover books.

While Marlow and the fan management team offered helpful reassurance, tabletop players remain eager for direct updates from Edge Studio. The French studio has stayed quiet in recent months, leaving game stores across Europe and North America with ongoing stock shortages and missing reprint dates. Volunteer moderators continue to support players across community channels, but fans are still waiting for Edge Studio to share its official product roadmap.
