Christopher Pickett and Stillfleet Studio have officially released the Danse Macabre Quickstart, bringing a dark historical fantasy tabletop roleplaying game to digital shelves in July 2026.

Set in 1390 Constantinople, the game presents a grim Mediterranean world where death abandoned humanity thirty years prior. Players take on the roles of branded convicts known as Pilgrims, forced outside the city walls to hunt for quintessence, a divine light trapped in pre-apocalypse relics that grants permanent rest.
Building on mechanics previously discussed with Christopher Pickett in earlier interviews, this quickstart offering delivers a complete snapshot of the game. The release pairs streamlined OSR-style survival rules with a Souls-like death loop, where dying alters your character rather than destroying them outright. With additional contributions from Wythe Marschall, Anthony Grasso, Ethan Gould, Jedd Cole, Sunaree Paiwong, Dr. Erica Bridges, Senua Lewis, and Alex McGuigan, this rulebook provides a tight introduction to medieval horror roleplaying.
The Setting
The campaign world places players straight into the Diarchy of Constantinople in 1390. Thirty years after the Great Abandonment of Death in 1360, the city stands divided between the Greek pseudo-emperor Andronikos IV Palaiologos in the east and the Ottoman pseudo-sultan Savcı Bey in the west. Outside the city walls, the wilderness swarms with demoniacs, former humans who died too many times and lost their sanity.
The setting balances rich historical details with clever fantasy concepts. Cities stay safe only while large choirs sing near ancient relics, causing quintessence to glow and protect citizens from false death. Because quintessence drains over time, rulers send condemned prisoners on dangerous pilgrimages into ruined settlements to retrieve old artefacts. This setup gives playgroups an immediate reason to explore the wild outdoors together.
The Grit System
Danse Macabre Quickstart uses the Grit System, a fast d20-free dice mechanic designed around four core attributes: Vitality, Finesse, Insight, and Fervour. Each attribute uses an assigned die type from d4 to d12. Standard task checks require rolling your attribute die against a target number of 6 or higher.
Resource management drives the tension in combat and exploration. A character’s pool consists of Health and Grit. Players can burn Grit to boost checks by +3, +6, or +9, or to trigger special class skills and combat options. When Health reaches zero, incoming damage drains Grit instead. Running out of both pool scores triggers false death, forcing the Pilgrim into a temporary slumber before they wake up mutated.
Character Classes and Maleficia
Character creation offers three distinct social backgrounds: Peasant, Scholar, and Burgher. Each class reflects late medieval Mediterranean society and grants access to specific starting powers. Peasants excel at physical labour, archery, and field survival. Scholars focus on history, medicine, and religious lore. Burghers bring trade knowledge, bribery skills, and urban instincts.
The game’s standout mechanic is its mutation table, called the Liber Maleficiorum. Every time a Pilgrim experiences false death, they roll for a new physical alteration known as a maleficium. Mutations range from extra arms and chitinous skin to dragon breath and flaming eyes. While these bodily changes grant powerful abilities, accumulating more mutations than your maximum Fervour score turns your Pilgrim into an NPC demoniac forever.

Pre-Written Adventure
The quickstart includes an introductory quest titled The Tower of Ash. The plot gives new Chroniclers everything required to run a complete session right away, including ready-to-use maps, monster profiles, and clear objective hooks.
The quest sends a newly branded caravan of Pilgrims beyond the safety of Constantinople’s walls to investigate an abandoned outpost. The scenario highlights the core game loop perfectly, forcing players to manage limited rations, dodge wild demoniacs, and locate hidden quintessent relics before returning home to claim their reward.
Summary and Recommendation
Danse Macabre Quickstart is an outstanding download for anyone who enjoys survival horror, OSR mechanics, or medieval history. The Grit System keeps action moving quickly, while the mutation table ensures that character deaths always push the narrative forward in surprising ways. The atmospheric art, tight rules presentation, and complete starter adventure make this free rulebook an essential addition to your digital tabletop collection
