It’s not often Geek Native’s anime coverage overlaps with tabletop games, but Japanese publisher Madaraushi is about to change that.
Via a Tweet and Youtube, Madaraushi announced a crowdfunding campaign for a 10-minute long proof of concept anime for the Cthulhu Mythos RPG. The planned launch is in October.
It won’t be the first time the tabletop RPG will have been connected to an animation. Madaraushi has shared others before.
Inspired by Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness (“Kyōki no Sanmyaku ni te” in Japanese), the tabletop RPG depicts a group of scientists on the front cover standing in front of a sombre black mountain. It’s these characters we’ve seen previously in animations.
The publisher’s free download page for one revision is all in Japanese, but Google describes an Air New Zealand tourist jet that vanishes and a search that leads to a previously unknown mountain range in the Antarctic.
The tabletop game is described as a “climbing RPG”, which may shed some light on the game’s mechanics and approach.
Call of Cthulhu is reportedly a more successful RPG in Japan than Dungeons & Dragons.
