I thought that The Abandoned House by the Cape was an award-winning story, a slice of life, that’s getting an anime.
But there’s a gotcha in the trailer, as this is clearly one heck of an extraordinary life…
Imagination? Perhaps. There are clues in the poster released as well but still open to interpretation.
What I know about the original novel is that it won the 2016 Noma Award for Juvenile Fiction. That author, Sachiko Kashiwaba, also wrote a book that inspired Hara’s The Wonderland film.
The anime is in remembrance of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, and so horrors from the sea are entirely in keeping. Still, there must be some concern about handling the topic sensitively.
The film is slated to hit cinema screens in Japan in August.
