Due to start in Japan in early July, Seirei Gensouki: Spirit Chronicles has released a new trailer.
The clips suggest an anime that ranges from softly spoken scenes, which make up most of the trailer, to a bit of sass and then some magical duels.
There’s a quirky background to Seirei Gensouki. It began as a user-generated novel on the website Shousetsuka ni Narou back in 2014. Imagine your blogged fan fiction getting a publishing deal. Yeah, it does happen.
Since then, 18 issues of the isekai fantasy series later sold over 1 million copies. The TV anime comes around its 15th birthday.
You can pick up the first 5 volumes, in English, over at comiXology where the license holder J-Novel Club makes it available digitally.
Here’s how they describe the plot;
Meet Rio: a callous orphaned boy living in the slums. At only 7-years-old, he realizes he’s actually the reincarnation of Haruto Amakawa, a Japanese university student with a tragic past. While still reeling from this shocking epiphany, Rio also comes to learn that he possesses extremely potent magical abilities and uses his new powers to solve the kidnapping case of a little girl. His good deed is acknowledged, and he’s rewarded by being enrolled into… a prestigious academy for noble children…?
