Japan as a nation rightly spends plenty of time thinking about water. The island nation gets much of its food from the sea and is equally threatened by it.
No surprise, then, to see water a frequent focus in anime. Aquatope of White Sand is a serene anime with glorious illustrations, smooth animation and perhaps a gently paced plot.
A girl-meets-girl story, Aquatope of White Sand uses an ensemble of characters to follow a former idol to Gamagama Aquarium. Our ex-idol, Fuuka Miyazawam, giving up on her dreams in Tokyo to come to Okinawa, soon finds that new life is endangered by the dire financial straights of the Aquarium. It’s going to shut down.
The series is due to start airing in Japan in July.
