July 2, 2022 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

It’s been a while since I pounced on a Zavvi flash sale, and they’re generally at least 10% off but over so quickly.

Visualising the biggest on-screen fantasy battle of all time (so far)

December 19, 2021 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

I’ve been in paintball battles, and it gets pretty intense with just a few people. So when I got an email inviting me to guess what the biggest on-screen battle of all time was, I was curious.

The game is designed for ages 10 and up, lasts around 50 minutes and is all about being a messy dwarf and annoying Bilbo!

Middle Earth map annotated by J.R.R. found in a book

October 26, 2015 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

This map was found in a book owned by the illustrator Pauline Baynes. Baynes had been tasked with creating illustrations by Tolkien’s publishers Allen & Unwin in 1970. In drawing her own map she worked with J.R.R. Tolkien who suggested edits on the like of city locations, flora and fauna. We get to discover that […]

Cheesy Hobbit Valentine’s Day cards

February 4, 2015 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

Created by Skirtzzz over on Deviant Art. Alli/Skirtzzz introduces these three with “I did a thing and I’m sorry”. Why should she be sorry? Cheesy is good. I was pleased to see “but only a little bit.” added on at the end. I don’t think you can buy these as actual cards. If you’re looking […]

This is the second cinematic montage from GameOvais and it is incredible. It’s hard not to become a champion for cinema after watching a collection like this. It’s worth keeping your geek hat on too and watch how many of these great films are directly inspired or taken from geeky titles. There’s over 300 movies […]

Rule 63 Bilbo Baggins

January 18, 2015 by Andrew Girdwood 2 Comments

Look at those feet! This is cosplayer and deviant artist Aishafee and about 3 months worth of work. According to the artist the most challening aspect of the cosplay was Sting. It took months to find the right sort of sword. I’m impressed.

Middle-Earth Facebook covers

January 9, 2015 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

It’s hard not to be impressed by Otis Frampton. He’s been featured twice on Geek Native before and is one of the two artists who work on “How It Should Have Ended”. It’s also worth checking out his t-shirt store. It’s his Hobbit and Lord of the Rings Facebook cover images that we’re looking at […]

Geek-perfect Sting sword replica glows when near wifi

December 24, 2014 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

Bilbo Baggins’ magic sword was called Sting and it glowed blue whenever orcs came too close. That’s pretty useful when you’re a Hobbit. Over at Make.com Krista Peryer has the story of a new generation of Sting, a geek perfect sword, a sword called WarSting. WarString glows whenever it detects unsecured wifi networks. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmjkUv5OtLM By […]
