Strangely cute, cleverly designed LEGO minifig mecha

August 6, 2014 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

These LEGO constructs are just the right size for minifigs and look incredible. They’re curved where you would not think curves possible, they’re detailed at a surprising level and have been built with an impressive eye for detail. I can’t decide though; are these scary mechas or cute? These mecha designs are the work of […]

Cleverly layered: A Knights of Sidonia anime review

July 7, 2014 by Andrew Girdwood 2 Comments

The Knights of Sidonia is the first anime I’ve watched on Netflix. One of the reasons I wanted to watch it was to encourage Netflix to buy in more – and they did do the heavy lifting on this one. The other reason was that the Knights of Sidonia looked like an interesting but relatively […]

Robert Chew’s mech animal illustrations

June 11, 2014 by Andrew Girdwood 2 Comments

These illustrations come with notes just as if they’re from an RPG sourcebook. What a fantastic idea too; animal-style robots/mech. The designer is a digital artist called Robert Chew who works from Santa Monica, California. It’s also worth noting that profit from the sale of these prints is donated to The International Anti-Poaching Foundation and […]

Rewriting the plot: A look at Eureka Seven AO part 2

May 30, 2014 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

In my review of Eureka Seven AO p1 I mentioned I hadn’t seen the first series, liked the anime but struggled to get into the characters. Part two is different for the obvious reason – I know the characters better now. It’s also different for the less obvious reason – the great big gun that […]

Snake Mecha LEGO design

May 11, 2014 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

LEGO builder Jerac created this Ninjago styled snake mecha. There’s no doubt of the snakeyness here and that’s hard to do with blocks. At the same time the design oozes mecha with those rocket launchers on the shoulders and sinister crab-like legs.

Robots vs aliens: A review of Eureka Seven AO

May 2, 2014 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

I was in at the deep end for Eureka Seven AO as it’s the sequel to Eureka Seven, which I haven’t seen. The good news is that I followed Eureka Seven AO without any bother. If there’s clever overlaps, foreshadowing or flashbacks to the original then they’re sailing right on by without disrupting my AO […]

Trailer for Mobile Police Patlabor live action

February 9, 2014 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

This is the Japanese trailer for the live action series Patlabor. Inspired by the anime series the mobile police specialise in dealing with crimes that involve the “labor mechanics” mechs. The live action is being released in episodes to the cinema. What do you make of the clip? I don’t understand any of the Japanese […]
