The crowdfunding for Clockwork Publishing’s Dark Conspiracy only just finished, it raised nearly $40,000 but it wasn’t enough. The German company has today announced it is bankrupt.
Clockwork Publishing (or in German: Uhrwerk Verlag) was founded in 2009 by Patric Götz.
The first games through the publisher’s doors were the German version of Hollow Earth Expedition and Deadlands Classic. They were responsible for bringing titles like Monte Cook’s Numenera and Modiphius’ Achtung! Cthulhu to Germany as well.
In this news post, Clockwork explains that the circumstances that led to the bankruptcy caught them by surprise. There are, however, options.
They’ll be assigned a bankruptcy manager who will assess their economic strength. In the meantime, they’re going to have their crowdfunding campaigns as their highest priority and will work very hard to fulfil or refund them.
They won’t be able to continue to organise Eulencon.
At this point, the future is somewhat out of their hands. They can’t tell customers, partners and freelancers what will happen next because they don’t know.
You can follow them, perhaps for updates, on Facebook.

Are there any updates on Clockwork Publishing’s IP? I GM several tables of Space 1889 (Clockwork/Ubiquity) at GenCon. I really feel that they did the best job building not just a setting for Space 1889, but a complete game in the spirit of the original from Frank Chadwick. I had heard maybe the editing might be sold to another gaming company, but I have not heard if that went anywhere beyond rumour.
