Wizards of the Coast have been shuffling their deck. Chris Cocks, President of the company since last year, talked about some of these changes on the Magic: The Gathering community site.
There are three main points he pulls out;
- The Digital Games Studio will focus on re-imagining digital version of WoTC games and includes the Magic Online team.
- Wizards games will appear in new platforms. He gives D&D as an augmented reality game as an example.
- A better Wizards of the coast experience through convenience.
These are all straight forward to understand. The Digital Games Studio isn’t a new company or imprint. I imagine its creation is purely about line management internally at Hasbro owned Wizards.
There must be pressure for Wizards to re-create a Pokemon Go or even a Mario Run and get their act together on mobile (Nintendo Switch, anyone?) or even VR. That part of the announcement makes sense to me too.
What bothers me is why this is an announcement at all. Is it more of a message to stakeholders, rather than fans, that Wizards are working hard to stay relevant?
