Legends of Avantris has secured £6 million in funding for Neon Odyssey, a massive 1,400-page space opera trilogy designed specifically for the revised 2024 mechanics of the world’s most popular roleplaying game. Kicktraq forecasts them to grow, and stick a zero to the end of that staggering total.
Based in Rockville, Maryland, the publisher is currently running the blockbuster campaign on Kickstarter, with funding set to close on 3 June 2026. This project follows their previous breakout hit, The Crooked Moon, and aims to deliver a comprehensive science-fantasy setting known as the Stardust Rhapsody.
The sheer scale of the campaign has captivated the tabletop community, drawing over 22,900 backers in its first few days. The trilogy comprises the Outrunner’s Handbook for player options, the Cosmic Codex setting guide, and the Overdrive Expansion for advanced vehicle systems. The launch has even crossed over into mainstream pop culture, bolstered by an official synthwave campaign anthem produced in collaboration with the band The Midnight. This ambitious crossover has already caught the attention of major mainstream gaming outlets, cementing the project as a significant cultural moment in the tabletop space. And, ahem, Geek Native had the news months ago.
A Galaxy of New Tabletop Mechanics
At the heart of the expansion is the Machinist, a brand new class built natively for the 5.5e ruleset that focuses on technomancy and master engineering. Players can specialise in creating gadgets, gear modifications, or unleashing powerful ‘Hypertech’ in battle. For those who prefer existing classes, the books include sci-fi “skins” for all core classes, ensuring that a paladin or druid feels narratively at home in a cockpit or on a digitised hypergrid.
The setting itself includes 30 explorable worlds and 12 major factions, such as the Cavalon Empire and the Solar Federation. The developers have prioritised variety in character creation, offering over 30 science-fantasy species, including the squishy Oozoid, the prehistoric Saurian, and the void-dwelling Nilari.
Beyond ground-level adventures, Neon Odyssey introduces a robust starship combat system. Players can take on roles as ace pilots in starfighters or man battle stations on transport gunships. These vehicles are fully customisable with various upgrades to suit different flight styles. To populate these encounters, the Cosmic Codex features a bestiary of more than 250 monsters, ranging from pixelated arcade creatures to colossal space clowns and endless bug swarms.
Defying System Fatigue

The overwhelming financial success of Neon Odyssey prompts an interesting analysis of the current tabletop market. In recent months, there has been speculation that players are experiencing fatigue with the dominant 5e system. However, a £6 million funding pool strongly suggests the opposite. The community is not tired of the mechanical engine; they are simply exhausted by standard high fantasy. A neon-drenched space opera fills a massive void in the current publication slate, offering a radical genre shift while allowing groups to use the rules they already know.
The campaign’s success is also a masterclass in momentum. Kickstarter algorithms heavily reward rapid, explosive funding. By combining an established audience from their previous projects with high-quality animation and music partnerships, Legends of Avantris created an inescapable social footprint. The sheer volume of backers creates a bandwagon effect, where the project becomes a self-fulfilling viral success. People are backing Neon Odyssey not just for the books, but to be part of an unprecedented community event.
Funding and Premium Rewards
Rather than offering a simple tier list, Legends of Avantris has structured their rewards to encourage physical bundles. While digital entry begins at approximately £23 for the Outrunner’s Handbook PDF, the true draw lies in the premium physical collections. Backers seeking the core experience can secure the hardcover trilogy in a premium slipcase for roughly £122. For serious collectors, the £366 Deluxe Box introduces spot-gloss holofoil covers, heavy metal Cyber Power dice, and the highly anticipated Cosmic Oracle deck.
