The manga Asura, from George Akiyama, ran from 1970 to 1979. It was controversial at the time because of the violence.
The anime Asura is being directed by Keiichi Sato (of Tiger & Bunny fame) and the screenplay was put together by Mononoke’s Ikuko Takahashi. The big names do not stop there as the voice actors include Masako Nozawa (who plays Goku in Dragon Ball) and Megumi Hayashibara (who plays Rei Ayanami in Evangelion).
The plot is set in 15th century Japan, during a famine and a war. Born into this chaos, Asura finds himself as a child roaming the hills like an animal hunter a young girl, Wakasa, finds him.
