Geek Native has officially launched Wyrm Watch, a live, synchronised procedural diorama embedded directly into the site. Readers can jump straight into the action at any time via the quick link sitting over in the sidebar. Every two minutes, an automated adventurer creeps out from the forest edge, tests their luck against a virtual twenty-sided die, and attempts to rob a slumbering dragon without waking it.

The sleeping dragon illustration at the heart of the project began life years ago as original art commissioned specifically for Geek Native business cards. Independent publishing requires ruthless efficiency, meaning commissioned assets must be used, adapted, and reused wherever possible. The artwork eventually made its way onto shirts, stickers, and homeware on Redbubble, but static merchandise left the scene half-told. A beast snoozing on an ever-shifting hoard of gold demanded movement, stakes, and intruders.
The synchronised watch
Wyrm Watch is built as a shared spectator sport. The engine runs on a deterministic mathematical loop tied to an absolute timeline, ensuring that every reader on the page witnesses the exact same event at the exact same second. If you watch a bumbling burglar trip over a tree root, an overconfident bard botch a performance check, or a robed acolyte deliver a tribute of rubies, anyone else watching across the globe sees that exact scene unfold simultaneously.
The live ledger at the top of the frame tracks three core metrics:
- Nap Streak: How many consecutive intruders have slipped past without waking the beast.
- Roasted: The total cumulative body count of thieves incinerated by dragon fire.
- Hoard: The physical volume of gold, which dynamically scales in real time as coins are looted or incinerated gear is melted down.
The mechanics: Pure SVG and JavaScript
Instead of embedding a video loop or heavy canvas rendering engine, Wyrm Watch is built entirely from lightweight inline Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) and vanilla JavaScript.
The environment dynamically adjusts its lighting based on the reader’s local system clock, transitioning through daylight, sunset, and pitch-black night. Moving character sprites and terrain operate under a real-time isometric depth-sorting algorithm, allowing intruders to duck behind shrubs or step out in front of mossy climbing stones depending on their coordinates. Independent ambient cycles introduce weather fronts, blowing leaves, ground moles, and midnight apparitions, all running without external libraries or main-thread bloat.
If you enjoy the widget, buying a sleepy dragon shirt on Redbubble directly funds future projects on the site. Otherwise, look for the link in the sidebar, pull up a chair, and see how long the dragon’s nap streak survives. Suggestions welcome!
