Abrams ComicArts has partnered with digital storefront Neon Ichiban to distribute its complete graphic novel backlist alongside upcoming titles, day and date with physical print. Announced on 28 October 2026 in New York and Los Angeles, the distribution deal brings creator-led works, including John Byrne’s X-Men: Elsewhen and Naoki Urasawa’s Billy Bat, to the independent digital reader founded by former Comixology executives.

The move links a traditional visual-arts publishing house to an ecosystem designed to challenge Amazon’s hold on digital comics. Since launching in 2025, Neon Ichiban has gathered catalogues from major publishers including Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, Kodansha, and DSTLRY. Adding Abrams ComicArts gives the storefront prestige literary adaptations, European bande dessinée translations, and creator-owned projects that rarely circulate through traditional direct-market comic shop distribution.

Joseph Montagne, VP and Publisher at Abrams ComicArts, said in a statement:
A reader might come to Neon Ichiban for John Byrne’s X-Men and discover Derf Backderf, Nate Powell, or a manga series from Kana. We want to encourage that curiosity. Bringing our backlist and new releases to the platform gives readers more ways to follow the artists they love and try books they might otherwise have missed.”
Neon Ichiban architecture and digital ownership
Founded by former Comixology leaders David Steinberger and Chip Mosher, Neon Ichiban directly responds to the degradation of dedicated comic reading apps after Amazon integrated Comixology into the Kindle infrastructure in 2022. The platform offers standard edition digital purchases alongside limited-edition digital variant covers and sketch covers, supporting both streaming web reading and local offline downloads.
David Steinberger, CEO & Co-Founder at Neon Ichiban, said in a statement:
For more than 15 years, Abrams ComicArts has published graphic novels that show just how far this medium can go. Now readers everywhere can discover their acclaimed books in digital form, right alongside the comics and manga they love.”
Chip Mosher, CCO & Co-Founder at Neon Ichiban, said in a statement:
Abrams ComicArts champions creators who push the form forward, from acclaimed literary adaptations to bold original graphic novels. We’re thrilled to give their authors, artists and cartoonists a home where fans can read, collect and connect with their work.”
Rights management and secondary marketplace realities
Neon Ichiban differentiates its software stack by offering a secondary digital marketplace where readers can resell eligible digital purchases to other users. Neither party has confirmed whether standard Abrams ComicArts publishing contracts permit secondary licence transfers, or whether digital purchases from the Abrams imprint will remain strictly tied to primary accounts.
Standard publishing contracts in traditional print trade imprints do not include secondary digital transfer clauses unless the creator explicitly renegotiates. Readers should also note that while the platform provides offline access through dedicated mobile and desktop applications, files remain protected within proprietary application containers rather than supplied as open, DRM-free PDF or CBZ files.
