We’ve all watched enough sci-fi thriller/horror/survival movies to know that things can – and do – go very wrong as part and parcel with the genre. But what about all the things that can go wrong on the journey back? Well, Above the Below has taken that thought and just ran with it.
The first trailer for the sci-fi terror (sorry, SURVIVAL) film has just dropped from Lionsgate, and it looks like a visually stunning new source of nightmare fuel, if you’re into that sort of thing. Spoiler: There’s a lot of water involved.
Interestingly, the film stars and is also co-directed by Idris Elba (alongside co-director Martin Owen) – and we’re getting the very first trailer for this movie only six weeks ahead of release, having been shot back in 2023/early 2024. For me, this is an unexpected December sci-fi treat.
As for the premise, the film focuses on three astronauts, Jackson (Elba), Brooks (Caitlin FitzGerald), and Rhodes (Hero Fiennes Tiffin), who experience issues upon re-entry, and are left in a sinking ship with, it appears, no help coming. How will they survive?
The trailer itself looks pretty impressive, but leaves a lot of questions as to the exact scenario the astronauts are in when they veer off course and crash land in the ocean. Are they on Earth? Is it the future? What sort of part does the ship’s AI play in all of this?!
Well, check out the full trailer below and take what you can from it.
There’s also this rather lovely poster to admire.

And you’ll be able to watch Above the Below surprisingly soon, when it’s released in cinemas on 4th December. That’s not long to wait!
What do you think of the first trailor for Above the Below? Will you be watching when it’s released in just six weeks? Comment below.
