Critical Role and Japanese entertainment firm COVER Corporation will launch Shattered Legends, a collaborative actual play miniseries using the Daggerheart tabletop system, in mid-November 2026. The production brings virtual talent from hololive production into Exandria’s official canon, directed by game designer and Critical Role co-founder Matthew Mercer.
The campaign will stream globally on YouTube and Critical Role’s subscription platform, with commercial sponsor Ultra PRO. Broadcasts will feature Japanese subtitles on Critical Role-run YouTube channels, English-branch talent, and performer Nerissa Ravencroft, alongside an international convention tour visiting North America, Europe, and Asia.
The Shattered Legends Production and Table Roster
The table pairs two core Critical Role producers with four VTubers from COVER Corporation’s English roster. Rather than running a detached side adventure, the cast will establish permanent lore in Mercer’s fantasy setting.
| Role | Performer | Character | Entity / Affiliation |
| Game Master | Matthew Mercer | System Referee | Critical Role |
| Player | Marisha Ray | Florence | Critical Role |
| Player | Nerissa Ravencroft | Siliun “Sil” Faell | hololive production |
| Player | Mori Calliope | Kaz Oogod | hololive production |
| Player | Shiori Novella | Marchen “March” Rosemyne | hololive production |
| Player | Gigi Murin | Giryn | hololive production |
The production runs on Daggerheart, the tabletop system designed and published by Critical Role’s publishing imprint, Darrington Press. The system collected a Gold ENNIE Award earlier in 2026 and departs from traditional d20 conventions through two core design choices:
- Hope and Fear Dice: Action checks use two twelve-sided dice of different colours. High results determine action success, while the dominant die dictates whether the outcome generates Hope for player resources or Fear for the Game Master to spend on adversary moves.
- Domain Card Progression: Character abilities, spells, and heritage traits run through physical cards rather than dense rulebook references, allowing players to adjust active powers between rests.
Tokyo corporate expansion and global convention strategy
COVER Corporation operates out of Minato-ku, Tokyo, under chief executive Motoaki Tanigo. Tokyo serves as the undisputed centre of the VTuber sector and hosts major hobby gaming gatherings such as Game Market at Tokyo Big Sight. By securing an official partnership with COVER Corporation and committing to Japanese subtitles for all primary broadcasts, Darrington Press is making a calculated push into the Japanese and broader East Asian hobby markets.
The planned convention circuit across North America, Europe, and Asia gives Darrington Press direct event promotion in territories where hololive talent routinely sells out arena-scale fan gatherings. The strategy moves Daggerheart away from standard hobby-store demo circuits, leaning instead on digital-first fandom communities that buy physical merchandise in volume.
Hybrid production questions and gated mechanics
While the trailer showcases visual assets and branding, the broadcast faces clear practical hurdles that the announcement sidesteps.
Critical Role built its brand on physical studio sets, tactile dice rolling, and in-person acting. Hololive talents perform exclusively as motion-captured digital avatars. The release leaves it unclear whether Mercer and Ray will sit beside physical monitors in their California studio, use augmented-reality overlays, or run the game entirely over remote streaming connections.
Distribution also creates an odd contradiction for new player onboarding. While main episodes will stream on open YouTube channels, the foundational “Session Zero”, which covers character generation, background creation, and rules demonstrations, is locked behind Critical Role’s paid subscription platform. New hobbyists wanting to see how character sheets and domain cards function step-by-step will find that educational material is placed behind a monthly subscription charge.
A final hurdle sits in story management. Mercer’s Exandrian world operates with rigorous continuity and consequences. COVER Corporation manages its talent under strict intellectual property guidelines and established streaming personas. Navigating the boundary between permanent setting danger and corporate avatar branding will test how much autonomy players have when the dice turn against them.
