Los Angeles tech studio QuestXR, Inc. has opened a $5 pre-launch reservation on BackerKit for QuestXR, an augmented-reality mobile title built on Chaosium’s Basic Roleplaying system, ahead of a crowdfunding campaign planned for November 2026.

The tech turns real-world environments into gameplay spaces without requiring physical installations, markers, or QR codes. Players use mobile phones to discover clues, solve puzzles, and fight encounters overlaid onto parks, urban streets, or cultural institutions, removing the traditional gaming table while retaining percentile dice mechanics. It’s Pokémon Go meets TTRPG.
Underneath the digital interface, QuestXR runs on Chaosium’s d100 Basic Roleplaying (BRP) engine, the mechanical core powering Call of Cthulhu and RuneQuest. The mobile platform includes options for automated sessions or live Game Master control, alongside a planned Quest Creation Toolkit intended to let Game Masters build, script, and distribute their own outdoor scenarios.
Adam Lesh and Zachary Hunchar co-founded the project. Lesh, who serves as Chief Executive and Chief Technology Officer, spent more than thirty years in digital media and augmented-reality development following early career contributions to Advanced Dungeons & Dragons supplements and Dragonlance anthologies. Hunchar, the studio’s Chief Creative Officer, brings over two decades of entertainment distribution experience alongside fiction writing, having authored the horror novel The Grange.
Zachary Hunchar, Co-Founder and Chief Creative Officer at QuestXR, Inc., said in a statement;
We don’t want to replace the tabletop RPG. We want to make it playable everywhere. The world is the dungeon.”
The concept grew out of discussions following pandemic-era cultural site closures, drawing structural inspiration from Larry Niven and Steven Barnes’s classic speculative gaming novel Dream Park. To introduce the setting, the team launched an episodic companion story, The Framework – Dodge & Kylan: Initiation, serialised on Royal Road. Set against real-world locations such as Los Angeles’s Getty Museum, the fiction translates BRP rules, character statistics, and perks into a modern setting.
While full crowdfunding launches in November 2026, an open technical playtest is already live through the studio’s web platform at qxrgame.com. Pledging the $5 reservation locks in a backer slot for the autumn campaign and provides an exclusive augmented-reality adventure module scheduled for delivery between late 2026 and early 2027.
