Get ready to channel your inner sorcerer! Square Enix has just unveiled a piece of merchandise that’s sure to cast a spell on Final Fantasy fans: a real-life replica of the iconic Black Mage hat, specifically modelled after the one worn by the beloved Vivi Ornitier from Final Fantasy IX.

While the Final Fantasy series is famously known for featuring standalone stories across its 16 mainline games, certain elements create a beloved tapestry that connects the 36-year-old franchise. One of the most recognisable is the Black Mage, the powerful magic user often distinguished by a tall, pointed hat with a wide brim that mysteriously shadows their face. This design dates back to the very first game in 1987 and has become synonymous with offensive magic in the RPG world.
Now, fans can own a piece of that history. This particular hat pays homage to Vivi, the shy and kind-hearted Black Mage from Final Fantasy IX. It’s a timely release, as FFIX – often cited by series creator Hironobu Sakaguchi as his personal favourite – is celebrating the 25th anniversary of its original PlayStation launch.
Be warned, though: this hat makes a statement! Designed faithfully based on Vivi’s appearance, it stands an impressive 72 centimetres (about 28.3 inches) tall, with the brim extending 14 centimetres from the cone. You might need to watch out for low doorways while rocking this magical headwear!

Ready to add this incredible piece to your collection? Vivi’s Black Mage Hat is now available for preorder directly from the Square Enix e-store. It’s priced at 17,600 yen (approximately US$121), with shipping expected around mid-August – just in time to perfect your Black Mage cosplay for Halloween! And yes, there are similar hats on Etsy, but none like this.
