In 1981, Hero Games launched Champions, a pioneering superhero role-playing game that quickly gained popularity. Within a short time, Champions saw two further editions. They expanded its scope significantly, encompassing not just superheroes but also modern espionage, pulp adventures, fantasy settings, science fiction, and even giant robots. Hero Games later licensed the Champions property to Iron Crown Enterprises (ICE).
In 1988, ICE embarked on a significant undertaking: to unify the diverse elements of the game’s past into a single, comprehensive rule system. This culminated in the release of Champions Fourth Edition in 1989. This edition, renowned among fans as the “Big Blue Book” due to its striking George Perez cover, represented a landmark achievement in RPG design, establishing the versatile HERO System.
