John Hedge, Brian Ashford & Colin Richards have released a free to download version of the hope-filled but post-apocalyptic TTRPG Embers of Humanity.
The front cover of the download says “free”, but DriveThruRPG has the PDF listed as Pay What You Want and $1.00 is the suggested default. As we’ll see, the team are being radically transparent about their funding, though.
In the tabletop RPG, PCs are among the few people left in the world, and they’re trying to rekindle humanity by slowly building a settlement.
The quickstart rules guide people through creating their apocalypse, rules to greatly reduce the stress on a GM and a simple settlement system.
There are rules for empathy in Embers of Humanit,y which cover how the survivors evolve and their outlook changes over time. There are also rules and information on The Weird.
If all that sounds great and you’re ready for the full game, that’s out too and costs less than $5. It’s 60 pages.

There’s a paid community around Embers of Humanity, managed by a Ki-Fi account, which is intended to keep the game’s content evolving and changing. Several members give €5 a month.
The radical transparency I mentioned is coming… and it’s a public spreadsheet of income.
The company is on BlueSky and Discord.
