There are over three and a half thousand official emojis in the Unicode Standard.
Call it a marketing stunt, call it a fair point, or both, but Ebuyer has set up a petition to ask that gaming characters are added.
In practical terms, you can download a set for yourself, for free, to use on platforms that let you upload your own or perhaps as avatars.
Andy Roberts, E-Commerce Director of Ebuyer.com told the press;
With over 3,500 emojis to choose from, its hard to believe that our favorite gaming characters have yet to make the list. Hopefully, our petition will encourage change whilst our online library allows users to access their favorite emojis immediately.”
Ebuyer is a site Geek Native’s blogger knows well; it’s the UK’s largest indie electrical retailer with over 30,000 products and amazingly 250 staff.
Hand on heart, it’s a site I’d always look at before a tech purchase. That’s why I get to point out that the Change.org petition to get the likes of Sonic, Pac-man ghosts, and Mario added to the Unicode standard is not going well. At the time of writing, there are less than two dozen signatures.
Perhaps games don’t see the need to respond to a text with an Angry Bird or a Princess Peach emoting hearts. I think some are better than others, but I’m not sure if any gaming character is useful enough in utility and ubiquitous enough to become an emoji.
