Jacob Duerksen has crowdfunded an adaptation of 5e based entirely on Irish mythology. The result is the Heroes of Tara Player’s Guide, which includes character generation and gameplay rules for the setting of Ériu.
The campaign asked Kickstarter for $10,000 (as it’s based in Cincinnati), and with three weeks still to run is 60% over, with nearly 400 backers and more than $16,000 pledged. You can find out more and join on the project page.
Ériu is a high fantasy version of Iron Age Ireland. With a design influenced by historical and archaeological research, the RPG adds Aes Sidhe, Fir Bolg and Gael as new tribes and Fennid, FIli and the Warrior of the Red Branch as classes.
The vibrant, outrageous, and romantic world of Irish mythology has a wealth to offer, with tender-hearted beauty and nerve-shaking passion in equal measure. In the Heroes of Tara Player’s Guide, we offer an immersive way to experience that world!
There’s an incredibly generous 270-page demo of Heroes of Tara Player’s Guide (PDF link) online as a free download. That looks to be the setting with rules, but barely any art.
We can also see the new backgrounds, feats, spells and the spellcasting system the setting ads. There’s also headhunting rules, new monster stat blocks and even an Irish pronunciation guide.
Accompanying the Kickstarter, there’s a Discord to join, which is likely an excellent place to ask questions, as is Kickstarter’s own system.
A pledge of just $5 is enough to get the nine-page Book of Invasions, a lore book taken from the Player’s Guide. It’s $30 for the full PDF. That includes a credit and all digital stretch goals that unlock.
For $35, an optional and discounted print-on-demand hardback coupon is added to those rewards.
At $150, Heroes of Tara offers a limited series of original woodblock prints, signed and framed. There are six options, and only 20 of each will be made on a first-come-first-serve basis.
Except for the teaser, The Book of Lore, the campaign is scheduled to be fulfilled in February 2022.
