Black Box and World Anvil, who might be better known as a campaign management solution, have come together on “The World Anvil Publishing” venture for Broken Tales.
Here’s the pitch for the partnership;
The World Anvil is a small indie RPG label designing original tabletop games with a distinctly European twist. Our production team lives between Finland and Italy, bringing together the operational reliability of the Nordics and the creativity of Italian RPG design.
The tabletop RPG recasts traditional fairytale villains as people seeking redemption, but in response, the world twists, corrupts, and the old heroes become the baddies.
If you’re curious about how such a fairytale world might look or what it’s like to run a game in then, there’s a preview available. The free to download quickstart for Broken Tales available from Dropbox.
The final game will be available in both English and Italian and come in a square 22x22cm book, sewn-bound and in full colour. In fact, the whole product is an art book and even vinyl record vibe to it.
Hunters, those once-villains, are characters in these new stories and the presented ones like Baba Yaga and the Wold are the centre of the art pieces.
Broken Tales reinterprets traditional fairytales through a dark lens, upending their premises. Players belong to the Order, a secret group operating on behalf of the Papacy, whose duty is to investigate events and threats beyond human understanding. An eerie 18th century Europe becomes the background for these unusual heroes – villains from various fairytales, now acting as protagonists in the new reality shaped by the Child Saviour.
A pledge of €18, which is about £16, will get you the PDF of Broken Tales, of all the Hunter Sheets (with some exclusives), your name in the book and stretch goals. €30 is required to get the Broken Ones book and sheets.
The physical book unlocks at €50, including laminated Hunter Sheets, a Kickstarter exclusive and the Broken Ones in PDF. The Broken Ones book becomes physical at the €85 pledge level (about £74).
The expected delivery is in April 2022, and a retailer bundle exists.
