Monte Cook’s Ptolus: City by the Spire is a $150 RPG but the Player’s Guide is free. At least, the PDF version of the Player’s Guide is free.
Ptolus was a campaign setting that Wizards of the Coast staff played in, and the 2020 Kickstarter for the 670+ page book funded both a 5e version and one for the Cypher System.
Perhaps you were born and raised here; perhaps you have recently arrived. Either way, you now walk the streets of Ptolus, that great port city beneath the towering, mysterious Spire.
The Guide, as you would expect, offers assistance on character creation for the brimming city setting. It includes information on the species and cultures unique to the world, offering background ideas and insight on the roles of classes in Ptolus society.
GMs will still need Ptolus: Monte Cook’s City by the Spire to run games, but the Player’s Guide offers a preview and an accessible way for players to get to grips with the setting and soak up the atmosphere.
The 32-page PDF is free, and there’s a $17.99 softcover available from the Monte Cook Games’ store. The Guide is suitable for both the 5e and Cypher System version of the game.
