In/Spectre was a Crunchyroll Originals that didn’t quite live up to my hopes.
On the plus side, it was a supernatural thriller with a central character as a positive representation of someone with a physical disability. Kotoko was kidnapped by yokai as a young girl, transformed into a powerful ambassador, a goddess, between the worlds but missing an eye and a leg.
However, the show then goes on to spend a long time on a lingering “monster of the week” plot with a faceless spirit murdering people.
The second series has been confirmed for Japan. We’re still to find out whether Crunchyroll will pick it back up, but they probably will.
The promotional video for In/Spectre 2, in Japanese, is more of a recap of the first season than anything else.
Kotoko encounters Kuro who has picked up terrifying healing powers from a childhood trauma with yokai himself.
Thus recruited, Kuro is set about helping Kotoko maintain peace by dealing with renegade yokai and helping to preserve that fragile veil between the real world and the supernatural.
