Look inside a great steampunk pub

July 8, 2014 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

Should you find yourself in Cluj-Napoca, Romania then make the time to visit Joben Bistro. This pub has been transformed by design studio 6th Sense into something avant-garde. I describe this as a steampunk variant. Freshome describes it as Jules Verne inspired. We’re both probably right.

Superhero Week: Steampunk Catwoman cosplay

July 2, 2014 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

Catwoman and anything steampunk are popular cosplays but it’s not all that common to see a steampunk Catwoman mashup done well. Cosplayer Its-Raining-Neon has managed just that. In part I think it’s because she’s dumped latex and avoided super tight leather. Instead we’ve a cosplay with lace gloves, a corset and baggy shorts. Photographs by […]

Concept art from the Dieselpunk RPG InSomnia

June 26, 2014 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

InSomnia is a computer RPG set in a dangerous dieselpunk universe. It’s a Kickstarter that’s already attracted 600+ backers and $15K+ in a few days. This is attempt two for InSomnia, though. The first attempt was cancelled because the development team, Studio MONO, felt they hadn’t communicated the game clearly enough. This is not, as […]

All In Together: Time travelling, steampunk, British rap

June 19, 2014 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

Professor Elemental is a British rapper with a twist. The twist? He’s a steampunk influenced, time-travelling adventurer with a monkey butler. His latest video is out today and for “All In Togther” from the album The Giddy Limit. Directed by Moog Gravett the video was shot at the Wild West Con at Old Tuscon Studios, […]

Steampunk science and elemental magic: A Silver Mirrors review

June 8, 2014 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

Silver Mirrors is the sequel to A.A. Aguirre’s Bronze Gods. The Apparatus Infernum series blends some steampunk concepts and imagery with fairy concepts and imagery. As a result you have trains powered by elementals that criss-cross a busy city on an island now sealed off by magic. In the first book our two detectives (a […]

Herbie goes steampunk

May 22, 2014 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

Do you remember the film Herbie Goes Bananas? It was the story of a little VW Beetle that seems to have a mind of its own. Roleplayers might worry about which dark force has taken control of the machine… but as this was a family Disney film there was no such dark twist. In this […]

Steampunk Snow White

April 30, 2014 by Andrew Girdwood 1 Comment

Not the usual mashup, I think, despite both steampunk and Disney princesses being popular choices. The cosplayer is Marta / Enjoy This and she’s wearing a design based on NoFlutter’s design for the Steampunk Fairy Tale Group Art project. The photographer is Alexander Nikolis.

Steampunk Stormtrooper cosplay

March 29, 2014 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

Not your usual Stormtrooper? A first time cosplayer was inspired by the steampunk Star Wars works of Bjorn Hurri. I understand why! Hurri’s art is fantastic and has been featured on Geek Native before. This is the piece that the cosplay is based on, I think. Via Fashionably Geek.

Steampunk Changelings: A review of Bronze Gods

March 29, 2014 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

Bronze Gods is an Apparatus Infernum novel, the first I think, from the partnership of Ann Aguirre and husband Andres Aguirre (writing as A.A. Aguirre). It’s an interesting set up that mixes a fairy/fantasy setting with steampunk. The exact mythology and lore isn’t spelt out in painstaking detail, it is hinted at through dreams and […]
