Cosplay highlights from Hoshicon 2013

July 16, 2013 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

The standard of cosplay continues to edge upwards as you’ll see some cracking efforts in this video. You’ll also see some funny attempts and nods to “it is the thought that counts”. Hoshicon 2013 must have been a fun convention to be at. Tickets for next year will be available at Hoshicon.org later.

Who’s leading the Ennies 2013 pack?

July 16, 2013 by Andrew Girdwood 1 Comment

The nominations for the 2013 ENnies are out. These are a big set of awards in the roleplaying publishing world. Counting by hand, I reach 57 publishers nominated and that’s up from just shy of 40 from 2012. Paizo Publishing and Pelgrane Press lead the pack with 7 nominations each, with Cubicle 7 in third […]

The incredible LEGO Marquis

July 15, 2013 by Andrew Girdwood 1 Comment

The Marquis is a LEGO construction that hangs from a tripod of plastic pipes. You can see the effect in Peter Mowry’s Flickr. Or you can skip the suspense and see what the 56 inch tall build looks like against a backdrop. Mowry’s giant build reflects what a spaceship designed to be part of a […]

Competition: Win one of three Pacific Rim novels

July 15, 2013 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

Pacific Rim is getting early rave reviews; giant mech fight for mankind against the Kaiju. Have you seen it yet? It looks like even the Jaegers, those giant mechs, aren’t enough to fight off the threat but mankind has one last chance – a washed up has-been pilot and an untested trainee coupled with a […]

Short film: The Flying Man

July 15, 2013 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

Marcus Alqueres (follow at @Marcus Alqueres) gets a load of credits here; director, producer, editor, story and he financed this himself. The Flying Man is an excellent short film. Is The Flying Man a superhero? If he is then he is here on his terms and they may not be terms we like. You can […]

Steampunk M.O.D.O.K. figure

July 15, 2013 by Andrew Girdwood 1 Comment

MODOK aka Mobile Organism Designed Only for Killing is a Marvel villain. He was created by Kirby and Lee and usually associated with AIM. As comic book fans would have noticed AIM was introduced in the most recent Iron Man (3) film. This impressive steampunk MODOK was created by Pack Rat Studios and gives us […]

An art deco style keyboard

July 15, 2013 by Andrew Girdwood 5 Comments

This keyboard is called The “Streamline” but it appears on Datamancer a site that uses the tagline; “Prestidigital Datamancery & Paraphrenalic Technofetishism”. I think that latter is far more evocative. Not even sure the heavily used “steampunk” is appropriate. It’s art deco, after all. This reminds me much more of styles we’ve seen in The […]

Portal 2 posters in the Portal style

July 15, 2013 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

I think Sam Huckle has done a great job at capturing the atmosphere in the game with these Portal 2 posters. There’s some of the best phrases too; “Are you still there?” asks the gun that would like to shoot you and “It’s been a looong tiime”.

Make your own dinosaur serving dish

July 14, 2013 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

Got any spare dinosaurs in the house? You might well do. These toys have the habit of either hiding or multiplying across the bedroom floor. As it happens you can take one of these dinosaur spawn and turn him into a cheeky looking plate for your gaming cookies. Full instructions can be found at Three […]

Savage Worlds Competition: Win a copy of Shaintar – Legends Arise

July 14, 2013 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

Ed Greenwood, the guy who created the hugely popular The Fogotten Realms setting, said of Shaintar: Legends Arise; Just paging through the Players Guide makes you want to play, and it’s genuinely hard to create a boring character using this book; everything works together to make your Hero interesting. And that’s even before you get […]
