It will come as no surprise to know that 2019 was D&D’s best yet.
Wizards of the Coast have released a press release for European media to say so and in it is a large infographic to celebrate their best year.
The 46th birthday of Dungeons & Dragons happened on a year in which the game had enjoyed six consecutive years of growth.
Do women play D&D? Yes, Nearly 40% of players identify as female.
D&D is also a growing “media property” and last year was responsible for 17.5 billion impressions and 4.3 billion minutes of content on Twitch.
Dan Barrett, EU Senior Brand Manager for Dungeons & Dragons, told press;
On the back of our biggest year in franchise history, Dungeons & Dragons is more popular than ever, with over 40 million fans globally. Our accelerating strong growth here in Europe contributes to that and is set to progress in 2020. With ongoing expansion into tabletop products, streaming entertainment, and digital games, we’re going to continue introducing new fans to our legendary world of fantasy storytelling for years to come.”

Wow. So apparently I’ve been dead for over a decade, since your graphic shows that no one over 45 plays the game. This will be a surprise to my my son (24), who’s been running our whole otherwise over-45 group for the last 3 years. After I taught him to play when he was younger.
Well, it’s Wizards’ graphic :) You’re not wrong, though, that’s an odd choice of age ranges. I know loads of 45+-year-old gamers, I’m nearly one myself! … it’s possible that we’re not statistically significant, are too grumpy to have filled in whichever survey WotC used for this or that pie chart is simply an analysis of the hobbies’ “newbies” :)
Unfortunately I can’t fine a source to the infographic. Since I want to use it in my masterthesis, can someone provide me with the original link/source/press release by WotC?
