Kings of War is a popular tabletop wargame from Mantic Games. It’s been going since 2009, and a third edition is due out in October.
There’s also an RPG version of the game company and Mantic as appointed Red Scar Publishing for the task. It’s been a busy time for the British studio as they’ve just made the Devil’s Run RPG quickstart available for free too.
The Kings of War RPG will use Red Scar’s TriCore system and details a high fantasy setting with god-like beings in conflict. The player’s goals in Kings of War are pretty high; to reign in a kingdom of their own.
The quickstart includes a summary of the game world, Pannithor, and a quick look at the lore of the land. There are six pre-genned characters and an introductory adventure.
It’s a 44-paged PDF split nearly evenly between RPG and the premade adventure. There’s a map of the world, and the quickstart shows off the great art Red Scar has access too.
TriCore uses 3d10 (normally) and a target number system. Successes are d10 rolls that get 6 or more. A test is passed if the number of successes rolled equals or beats the target number.
Characters have Keywords associated with them – like Insightful Wisdom – and if players can roleplay how that Keyword is helpful in the test, then they can add an extra d10 to the roll. Negative Keywords are a thing too.
