Nintendo designed Pokémon to be instantly recognisable, aggressively cute, and universally marketable. David Szilagyi takes that wholesome, family-friendly aesthetic and aggressively corrupts it.
Inspired by the gothic nightmare fuel of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark and the biomechanical body horror of H.R. Giger, Szilagyi’s “Creepy Pokémon” project strips away the bright colours and rounded edges. In their place, he leaves hollowed-out eyes, jagged teeth, and exposed viscera, turning nostalgic childhood memories into legitimate survival horror monsters.
Szilagyi originally launched these designs as a weekly Patreon project to redraw the entire Pokédex. Today, he works as a Senior Character Concept Artist in the video game industry, specialising in dark fantasy and horror. You can view his current professional portfolio over at his ArtStation page.
