The first Tangles teaser trailer has dropped from IFC, and it already looked like it’s going to be an emotional journey for all of us. The film tackles Alzheimer’s and how it affects a family and their relationships, whilst bringing to the forefront the emotional toll of watching a loved one gradually lose their memories. Ouch.
The film is set in ’90s San Francisco, and follows Sarah, a young woman just beginning to build a life for herself, having found love and independence. However, a visit to her hometown and family life means things quickly come crashing down around her when her mother, Midge, is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. She’s suddenly faced with many challenges and has to find out how she fits into this new reality.
Alzheimer’s affects so many of us, in one way or another, so this feels like a very important watch, whilst blending humour, heartbreak and the complex ties that bind families together – as well as the strength of love.
Making up the voice cast, we have Abbi Jacobson as Sarah, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Midge, along with Bryan Cranston, Beanie Feldstein, Seth Rogen, and Samira Wiley.

I think this looks like it has the potential to be a very special film – partially because the subject matter is so important, and partly because it looks like a lot of creativity has gone into this particular method of storytelling. Some of the initial visuals – like the upside down plane, or the waves coming out of nowhere – look very engaging and quirky.
IFC is set to release Tangles in select U.S. cinemas on 15th January, 2027, with a UK release expected shortly after.
