Michigan tabletop publisher Palladium Books has terminated its licensing agreement with Paramount for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles & Other Strangeness after renewal negotiations stalled. Effective immediately, the studio has cut prices by 40% across its remaining stock of remastered hardcovers, screens, and dice to clear out its Westland warehouse before rights lapse permanently.

The decision brings a sudden close to the property’s brief modern revival. In late 2023, Palladium raised over $1.2 million on Kickstarter to fund deluxe editions of the 1985 classic. Despite that commercial success, founder Kevin Siembieda and creative director Sean Owen Roberson confirmed the company could not reach agreeable contractual terms with studio owner Paramount to produce follow-up sourcebooks or keep the licence active.
Kevin Siembieda, founder and lead designer at Palladium Books, said in a statement,
We had some cool ideas for brand new TMNT & Other Strangeness RPG books and accessories, but we were unable to reach mutually acceptable licensing terms and Palladium Books has chosen not to renew the Ninja Turtles license. This was a mutual decision by Sean and I.”
Warehouse clearance and product reductions
Palladium confirmed that once current stock sells out, no reprints will occur. The discount applies immediately across the webstore while supplies last.

Addressing legacy controversies
The abrupt exit marks an ironic end for a game line that had just resolved its historical baggage. The original 1985 core book, penned by the late Erick Wujcik, carried notorious insanity and mental trauma tables copied from outdated psychiatric manuals. Those tables infamously classified homosexuality as a mental aberration alongside homicidal psychosis and sexual deviancy.
When Palladium launched its 2023 crowdfunder, the team faced intense scrutiny over whether those elements would persist. Sean Owen Roberson and his editorial team successfully excised those offensive legacy tables and updated dated systems. The project proved that legacy roleplaying games could modernise offensive content while preserving the raw, black-and-white comic energy pioneered by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird.
The digital preservation problem
The loss of the licence exposes a digital preservation issue for the hobby. Because the agreement with Paramount covered physical prints and direct backer fulfilment, the remastered rules never secured a permanent home on open PDF storefronts such as DriveThruRPG.
Once warehouse inventory clears, the Redux rules revisions, including clean vehicle combat rules, expanded animal mutation budgets, and character profiles for Karai and the Fugitoid, will drop out of print entirely. Backers and direct retail customers will hold the only legal copies in circulation, driving the second-hand market into collector territory.
Shifting focus to Rifts and Mechanoids
Rather than spending capital on licensor minimum guarantees and approval queues, Palladium is pivoting back to wholly owned intellectual properties. The studio is launching its crowdfunding campaign for the Rifts: Glitter Boy Codex on BackerKit, alongside a complete remaster of The Mechanoids Redux Edition to mark the company’s 45th anniversary.
Kevin Siembieda, founder and lead designer at Palladium Books, said in an email,
Moving forward without the Ninja Turtles license is okay. Palladium has a lot of other opportunities and untapped potential. Most immediate is of course Palladium’s own Intellectual Properties, old and new, continuing our emphasis on releasing announced projects for Rifts, Palladium Fantasy, and Beyond the Supernatural titles.”
For collectors wanting the restored rules on their shelves before rights vanish behind corporate vault doors, the remaining print copies are available directly from the publisher.
