Blizzard Entertainment announced World of Warcraft: Forever at BlizzCon 2026 in Anaheim, California, establishing a permanent alternate branch of the fantasy game set during the original 2004 timeline. The release launches on 4 November 2026 for Windows and macOS, preceded by a closed beta running from 17 September to 21 October. Rather than restarting the familiar expansion treadmill, the release locks the level cap at level 60 and adds three original zones, nine dungeons, two raids, and over 1,000 quests.
Access to the base game is tied to an existing monthly subscription, but Blizzard has sparked immediate debate by paywalling core character creation. Playing the newly introduced Skyborne elf race and visiting their starting area on Zephras Isle requires buying the Skyborne Heroic Pack for £25.99 or higher. While modern roleplaying games often rely on cosmetic add-ons, gating an entire playable ancestry behind an upfront digital purchase within a subscription title departs sharply from traditional design standards.
Banking on Slow Travel in an Esports Era
Blizzard’s timing reveals an unexpected market bet. Contemporary multiplayer gaming remains dominated by high-intensity esports titles, round-based shooters, and battle arenas designed for streaming spectacles and fast engagement. Online roleplaying games built around slow foot travel, extensive quest logs, and deliberate character pacing no longer command the cultural centre stage.
World of Warcraft: Forever attempts to counter this trend by leaning directly into original world design. Blizzard is banking on the deep nostalgia of players who value the journey across Azeroth rather than rapid endgame progression. Executive producer Holly Longdale described the project as a way to preserve the original world’s foundation while building fresh adventures that sit alongside both the modern retail game and World of Warcraft Classic.
Instead of asking players to conquer Outland or Northrend, Forever branches outward. The story focuses on early conflicts, introducing Dwarf Shamans and Forsaken Paladins into the faction rosters. The design team has added a Camping system to support outdoor survival and long wilderness journeys, paired with revisions to professions and player-versus-player honour rankings. Progression beyond level 60 relies on an account-wide Legacy system and horizontal gear targets across 10-player and 20-player raid instances.
The True Cost of Classic Plus
Blizzard’s practical challenge lies in long-term balance and commercial goodwill. While players spent years petitioning for a “Classic Plus” experience that expanded the vanilla world, the pricing structure introduces significant financial hurdles.
Beyond the £25.99 Heroic Pack, Blizzard is offering a £51.99 Skyborne Epic Pack containing beta access and 30 days of game time, alongside a £69.99 Warcraft Forever Collection. The top-tier bundles include Warcraft III: Reforged with a new real-time strategy campaign, Forsaken Kingdom, which depicts the origin of the first Forsaken Paladin.
Tying lore revelations, real-time strategy campaigns, and an essential player race to premium tiers risks alienating the core audience that kept vanilla private servers and Classic realms alive. If horizontal progression fails to keep players engaged at level 60, nostalgia alone may not sustain an early-2000s social experiment in a fast-moving gaming market.
