Scottish games studio Terror Toad brought Rise of the Living Bread! to Tabletop Scotland 2026 at the Royal Highland Centre, marking the publisher’s return following courier legal disputes and corporate restructuring. The £14 card game barely met the show’s manufacturing deadlines, but founders Chris and Katie secured physical copies in time for the Edinburgh event, showcasing a compact title designed to subvert classic memory mechanics.

Geek Native caught up with the team on the convention floor, tracking their operational recovery following its prior reporting on the studio’s legal mediation and partner exit. Speaking to Geek Native at Tabletop Scotland, the team explained that this release pushes their aesthetic in a fresh direction, blending cute character illustrations with horror themes. The artwork features an anxious slice of white bread with tiny limbs, wide eyes, and an oozing jam mouth print, striking a balance between accessible comic art and macabre design without overstepping the mark.
Mechanically, the game takes the traditional search-and-find memory grid and deliberately dismantles it. Players search a (gingham picnic blanket optional) grid to round up four runaway sandwiches, but specialised action cards disrupt spatial memory. Turning over a dizzy wasp forces a player to shuffle an entire column of cards, while finding a tea grants a quick peek at hidden positions. Dawdling ducks and unreasonable ants further scramble the layout, creating a dynamic state where card tracking changes turn by turn.
The boxed game provides three rule sets: the standard competitive mode “Oh Crumbs”, a head-to-head two-player variant called “Picnic Panic”, and a solo mode titled “Solo Spread”. This single-player option introduces targeted puzzle parameters, extending replay value for an inexpensive small-box title.
Rise of the Living Bread! is available to pre-order directly from the Terror Toad shop for £14.00, scheduled for general dispatch this September. Readers tracking the publisher’s background can catch up on Terror Toad’s post-mediation journey on Geek Native.
