Gamehole Publishing brings Wardens of the Eastern Marches to UK Games Expo 2027

Gamehole Publishing will bring its independent fifth-edition Dungeons & Dragons organised play campaign, Wardens of the Eastern Marches, to the UK Games Expo in June 2027. The move marks the first major international deployment for the Wisconsin-based tabletop program, establishing an organised transatlantic convention presence outside its domestic circuit.

The announcement extends the Madison studio’s reach well beyond the traditional UK winter convention milestones. While British tabletop players usually treat Dragonmeet in late November as the closing chapter of the annual convention calendar, Alex Kammer and his team have moved early to plant a flag for the summer 2027 season at the NEC in Birmingham.

Alex Kammer, Lead Designer and Director at Gamehole Publishing, said in a statement on Facebook:

We are delighted to announce that we will be bringing our 5th edition Dungeons & Dragons organized play program, Wardens of the Eastern Marches to UKGE next year! We cannot wait to introduce you all to the Eastern Marches and all the fun that comes with being a Warden.

Setting the Marches

Wardens of the Eastern Marches is set in a low-magic, medieval frontier on the eastern edge of the Asura continent. The region is hemmed in by the Sapphire Sea to the east and the Kolmenus Mountains to the west, defined by the collapse of historic empires. Centuries after the fall of the Orcish legal scholar Kharzug’s central code and the ruined northern towers of the Mageocracy of Hyseria, player characters serve as fixers, scouts, and mercenaries exploring wild borderlands.

Every character must join one of six competing Alliances:

• The Order of the Intrepid: A network of underground syndicates and criminal outfits that position themselves as protectors of the common people.
• The Enterprise Guild: Merchants and trading houses that treat commerce as the fundamental driver of civilisation.
• The Quill Society: Academics, librarians, and archivists dedicated to recovering lost lore.
• The Order of the Pontificate: A coalition of diverse polytheistic faiths serving as a moral bulwark against corruption.
• The Golden Conservancy: A decentralised gathering of rangers, druids, and herbalists protecting natural boundaries.
• The Sovereign Military Order of Asura: A formal union of active and retired soldiers, mercenary companies, and city guards.

Alliance membership is permanent and dictates the specific missions characters receive, as well as level-based rewards such as bespoke faction signet rings and high-tier party aura buffs.

Bureaucracy Versus the “Rules-Light” Claim

The campaign documentation claims that the program aims to be “very light on rules”, relying on table arbiters to curb power gaming rather than erecting an elaborate framework. In practice, however, the structure surrounding the table is remarkably strict.

Character creation enforces fixed ability arrays (Standard, Specialist, or Generalist) and restricts character options strictly to core Wizards of the Coast hardcovers alongside third-party materials from Kobold Press, Ghostfire Gaming, and Frog God Games. Home levelling is completely forbidden; characters only gain levels and keep gear by sitting down at sanctioned public tables.

The physical logistics are equally formal. Magic items discovered during play are tracked via physical Magic Item Certificates. Players face hard caps on how many certificates a character may own at a time, scaling from three certificates at levels 1 to 3 up to nine at level 9. Excess certificates must be sold back to a designated convention “Emporium” for fixed coin values or deposited into an admin desk dropbox, while item trades between players are limited strictly to identical rarity tiers.

The Sanctioned Play Hurdle

Taking Wardens of the Eastern Marches to the NEC introduces practical logistical questions for British roleplaying game enthusiasts. Between levels 1 and 10, characters level up after a single adventure, meaning a player can easily rise through an entire tier across a three-day weekend. However, because levelling outside sanctioned conventions is expressly prohibited, UK players without access to local sanctioned retail hubs risk holding “frozen” character sheets until the next major convention run.

Whether Gamehole Publishing intends to support UK gaming shops with a distributed sanctioning model ahead of June 2027 remains the critical missing variable. For now, the studio is betting that convention attendees are eager to trade the corporate ecosystem of official Adventurers League for an old-school, certificate-driven campaign.
